The Brewer's Apprentice and Alberta Beer Festivals have always been about beer education. In order to continue that practice, they have created Brew Ed., a four-part course that will cover all aspects about beer. Think of it as a short course school for beer. Intimidated by the number of beers available and would like to know more about different beer styles? Are you currently employed or thinking about working in the restaurant service or alcohol retail industry? Do you plan to take the Cicerone Certification Program or want to learn more about the Beer Judge Certification Program? Intent on becoming a home brewer, but would like to know what varieties to brew? Or, simply, you just like beer and would like to know more about it? If you answered yes to any of the above, then Brew Ed is for you.
Each class of 10 people (maximum) will run approximately three hours and will cover a different topic such as the history of beer styles, how beer is made, and get up and personal with beer’s different ingredients. We will study beer’s characteristics and components, what makes a good beer, and even learn how to judge a beer. You’ll also learn a bit about beer packaging, glassware and home brewing. Lastly, we will also look at some food and beer pairings and talk about cooking with beer. Approximately a dozen beers will be sampled each class, so you’ll see and taste the difference between the different beer styles. The final class will be a “field trip” to one of Calgary’s breweries, where the “students” can see how beer is made first hand. And note: there will be NO final exam!
In addition to learning about the world’s most popular alcoholic beverage in an educational yet fun “classroom” you will:
- Receive your own Growler
- Be eligible to win some beer swag
- Try some surprise beers
- Be eligible to judge and/or steward at Calgary International Beerfest in May 2023, which includes free admission to the show. Details will be explained in “class”.
So register for Calgary’s most comprehensive beer learning experience today, before all the spots fill up! The next session will begin in March 2023. Note: You must be 18 years or older to register.
