Northern Ranger is a Toronto-based modern sextet led by musician and composer Harry Vetro. The band features JUNO Award winners, prominent Canadian artists and emerging musicians all whom are University of Toronto faculty, alumni, or students.

French-Canadian trumpeter Rachel Therrien, now established in New York City, is an internationally recognized composer and bandleader. This year, she is presenting her fourth record “Why Don’ Try” (2017) with concerts in Canada, USA, France, Germany, Ukraine and Spain. A highly-skilled, versatile and innovative artist, Therrien’s repertoire reflects her very own personal signature through her wide-ranging influences from traditional jazz to afro-latin to progressive rock.

Acclaimed jazz drummer Ethan Ardelli brings his quartet to Calgary to promote the release of his debut album "The Island of Form". Featuring a collection of top players from Canada including GRAMMY-nominated saxophonist Luis Denis originally from Cuba, this should be a special evening of music.

With an eye to the golden age of jazz and a finger on the pulse of the modern singer-songwriter aesthetic, Allison creates a singular compositional voice that transcends era through a deliberate mix of the modern and the classic. With technical chops earned from her degree in classical singing and composition, Allison fuses jazz, blues, folk and pop influences on Skin & Flame, her intimate first release that features sensuous vocals, bluesy folk-uke ballads and a few newly imagined standards from the jazz repertoire.

She’ll be joined by a stellar band of jazz musicians from across Canada.

The JazzYYC Canadian Festival celebrates the very best in jazz from across the country! It takes place in November in venues along Calgary’s Music Mile, and this year the festival has gender-parity among the bandleaders! The headliner this year is the highly acclaimed Montréal Guitare Trio, and the Canadian Stage features JUNO nominee Barbra Lica, unique modern jazz inspired by six Canadian Indigenous cultural areas, an acclaimed female trumpeter based in New York, and more! The Alberta Stage features Edmonton trombonist Audrey Ochoa and local theatre star, Allison Lynch. Cap it all off with outreach workshops and a free JazzWalk in Inglewood featuring Calgarian musicians.
JazzYYC is Calgary’s jazz collaborative. There’s strength when we work together. JazzYYC represents, supports and promotes jazz in Calgary year around. The Calgary jazz scene is exciting and plentiful. Whether you’re a jazz musician, a diehard jazz fan or a jazz dabbler, JazzYYC has something for you. Come experience Calgary’s jazz scene.
