It’s time to CHANGE THE CONVERSATION
Join in for a unique, memorable and inspiring social event hosted by Dave Kelly. Many of your time-honoured, favourite gala elements will return, with the addition of some new features as the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter continues its efforts to change the conversation around domestic violence and abuse.
Help commemorate the important work of the agency and its impact on our community. Your support will fund much-needed services for people experiencing neglect, violence and abuse.
Every human has the right to feel safe, respected, supported and loved.
Join in at the Turning Points Gala on April 20th. Your support will make a difference in changing the lives of many.
What started off as a dinner for friends in 1994, has turned into a signature annual event for the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter, changing the lives of many families and individuals.
The gala will reflect on the important work and accomplishments of the agency over the years, while looking ahead at the work that still needs to be done. It will celebrate the many courageous families and individuals in our city striving every day to live free from family violence and abuse. The gala will unmask the myths, stereotypes and stigmas to reveal the true picture of this issue, as well as bring awareness to the important work of the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter in the community.
In 1973, a group of visionary women opened a small volunteer-run shelter for women and families in Calgary. The following year, the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter registered as a charity, formally taking over the operations. Since our origins in a 13-bed facility in the Beltline area, the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter has expanded to serve over 20,000 Calgarians annually.
The evolution of the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter is FearIsNotLove. In partnership with leaders in the field of domestic violence and abuse counselling, FearIsNotLove embraces a “Response-Based approach” to support any person who has experienced neglect, violence and abuse. This approach was developed by Canadian family therapists and researchers Dr. Allan Wade, Dr. Linda Coates, Dr. Catherine Richardson, Dr. Shelly Dean, and Nick Todd.
