Audiences of all generations will enjoy acquainting — or reacquainting — themselves with the sisters: Meg, the eldest Jo, the high-spirited tomboy Amy, the self-centered beauty and gentle Beth, as well as their beloved Marmee and Father. Together the March family learns to endure both good times and bad as they share the joys and pains of growing up. Penned by Louisa May Alcott 140 years ago, this much-loved classic tale’s message is still relevant for audiences today.

This year’s exhibition features S4M4R3S by aenl (Anna Eyler & Nicolas Lapointe), a durational installation where a 12-hour pixelated landscape plays out alongside a suspended thermal printer that unpredictably releases daily prints, quietly materializing the passage of time
Meter & Light: Night by Zain Alam, an immersive three-channel audiovisual environment that captures the nocturnal rhythms, rituals, and spiritual cycles of Muslim life through sound, movement, and light
TTES: The ROM Collection by Teresa Tam, which repurposes Gameboy hardware, e-paper screens, and DIY tools to explore bootlegging, ancestral memory, and the incomplete ways cultural knowledge is transmitted
Twenty Twenty-Five by Ghazal Majidi, an interactive digital mirror that maps the viewer’s body against an archive of airstrike imagery, confronting questions of spectatorship, distance, and ethical seeing
and Firefly by Audrey Burch & Ileana Park, a playful, wearable installation where light-responsive devices communicate with one another, transforming collective movement into emergent patterns and shared moments of discovery.

A trio of extraordinary live works that reshape how we experience sound, movement, and space:
Molecular Incantations // Sympathetic Telepathy (MIST) by erψn temp3st blends dance, sound, and object interaction to explore queer materiality and the intimate resonance between bodies, space, and vibration through amplified movement, feedback, and experimental sonic choreography.
pakone-kisik by Tyson Houseman is a live video performance that uses multi-camera feedback, cymatic water, and liquid ink manipulations to transform intimate, micro-scale visuals into immersive cosmic imagery inspired by nêhiyaw star maps and the Pleiades “hole-in-the-sky” portal.
The Snare Drum Project by Mikołaj Rytowski is an immersive multi-sensory performance and installation that reimagines percussion by combining twenty spatially arranged snare drums with light and sound to create a deeply felt, interactive experience.

This year’s Particle + Wave exhibition showcases the incredible range of technological possibilities in contemporary media art, highlighting both the tools and the conceptual frameworks that shape the field today. Together, these works reveal how media art continues to evolve, embracing new technologies, experimental processes, and participatory frameworks to expand the ways we perceive, experience, and reflect on the world.

Together, these works highlight the diversity of technological approaches in contemporary performance, from analog and digital feedback loops to live cinema and spatialized sound, offering audiences a chance to witness how media art continues to evolve, transform, and surprise.

EMMEDIA is home to the only media arts festival in Alberta that focuses on interactive art, projection mapping, AR and VR, and audio-visual installations and performances. Since 2012, this annual festival showcases an art form that, by its very nature, is constantly evolving and growing with the integration of ever-changing technological processes. In this 2026 edition, so you are invited to slow down, experience, confront and discover new perspectives.
For over 45 years, EMMEDIA Gallery & Production Society has been a driving force in Calgary’s media arts scene.

EMMEDIA is an artist-run centre with a focus on the production, public presentation, education/development and critical dissemination of media arts. They support an array of artistic disciplines including audio, video, web-based art, experimental film, animation, multimedia, performance and installation.

Puppets, masks, and a little whimsy.

The Festival of Animated Objects marries the timeless practice of mask and puppet arts with contemporary spaces, themes and ideas. The landscape of puppet and mask arts is ever-growing, just like the festival. With over 35 performances, screenings, workshops and exhibitions, this is one of the biggest lineups the festival has seen.

The International Festival of Animated Objects Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting mask & puppet related performance. As an incubator and producer of mask, puppetry, and animated objects they are the primary curator and presenter of local, national and international puppetry. They strive to provide Alberta audiences with the chance to experience the breadth and diversity of these innovative art forms.

Vital to the development of puppetry as an art form, the festival not only provides a stage for Alberta creators to showcase their work but is also a forum for an international exchange of ideas providing learning opportunities for professional and emerging artists and the public at large to find expression through animated objects.

As an art form, puppetry is the great equalizer. Breathing life into the inanimate is a foundational act of creation which allows us to connect us in a visceral way that crosses cultures and identities. It tells the stories that tie us together.
