Sean Craig is an educator and saxophonist based in Calgary, Alberta. He is a graduate of McGill University where he completed a Master’s degree in Jazz Performance. He also holds an education degree and works as a teacher for the Calgary Catholic School Board.

He is an active member of the local Calgary music scene working with various artists and ensembles and performs regularly with Prime Time Big Band and The Calgary Jazz Orchestra. As an educator, Sean is in demand as a clinician and guest conductor. He held the position of artistic director of the JazzYYC Youth Lab Band from 2016-2020 and sits on the education and community outreach committee for JazzYYC.

The 2025 Sound Atlas Festival's SONIC PLAYGROUND kicks off with a brilliantly fun and virtuosic feast for the ears. Welcome to a TOY STORE of sonic delights, featuring three distinct performing acts that will take you on an eclectic musical adventure.

7:00 p.m. - Toy Store begins with the Canadian premiere of featured composer Juri Seo's Toy Store, an epic five movement tour-de-force for violin, electronics, and video projections. This playfully outrageous work will feature the mesmerizing virtuosity of internationally acclaimed violinist Jinjoo Cho and video artist Changyeob Ok.

8:15 p.m. - Powerhouse host ensemble Latitude 49 presents Contrapuntal Blend, a mind-melting set featuring Juri Seo's singular Contrapuntal Forms, Liam Eliiot's lush Transpiring inspired by Canadian landscapes, and the Canadian premiere of Bill Ryan's Original Blend that will keep you moving and grooving.

9:30 p.m. - Witness the hypnotic blend of three of Calgary's finest solo acts - Darren Young, FOONYAP, and Hello Moth present Subverdant, a collaborative performance weaving material from their individual practices and new work that explores post-apocalyptic supergrowth. Electronics and looped soundscapes are the rotting bones that nourish processed vocals and moody guitar pickings. Radioactive beats push through the greenery of soft ballads.

7:00 p.m. - The Games We Play begins with the live performance world premiere of The Bagatelles Project - a radical collection of 36 distinct miniatures for solo instruments by 36 compelling composers. Part game, part conversation, this interactive musical montage features each of the musicians in Latitude 49 in an exhilarating game of musical pass. *The Bagatelles Project will be presented seamlessly in two distinct sets.

8:15 p.m. - Edmonton-based new music ambassadors UltraViolet present Hear Canada, an illuminating set of undulating works by Rio Houle, Niaz Pirzadeh, and Anthony Tan that traverse new sonic landscapes by Canada's emerging composers. This distinctly all-Canadian set by an all-Albertan collective is sure to captivate and inspire.

9:30 p.m. - After a playful pop-up of Juri Seo's Spoons by local duo Sound Ground comprised of percussion heroes Sean Buckley and Nia Devetzis, Latitude 49 returns for the bookend presentation of The Bagatelles Project.

2:00 p.m. - Merry-Go-Round begins with a joy-filled play of music by Vincent Ho by 2025 Contemporary Performance Lab fellows, a think tank for emerging new music ambassadors. This year's Latitude 49 solo feature is celebrated American clarinetist Andy Hudson presenting "Swing/Set", a wild ride of music for amplified bass clarinet and electronics by Andrew M. Rodriguez, Kevin Clausen and world premieres by Anna Meadors and Chris Sies.

3:15 p.m. - Member of your Calgary Phil and renowned violist Jesse Morrison proves that playing music can be serious fun with his distinct set, REimagine, transforming the viola into a solo architect of sonic adventures. Count on charismatic performances of works by Brett Dean, Alice Ping Yee Ho, and Chris Paul Harman.

4:30 p.m. - Latitude 49 closes the 2025 Sound Atlas Festival with a childlike sense of play and exploration. With distinct perfomances of works by Marcus Goddard and Garrett Schumann, the Contemporary Performance Lab fellows will inspire and delight. Experience the magical mashup of Renaissance and Jazz found in the music of featured composer Juri Seo performed by Latitude 49 to close the festival.

Immediately following the conclusion of the festival, an album release party will take place in the Atrium for the newly released Obsolete Music on New Amsterdam Records featuring music by composer Juri Seo performed by Latitude 49. Please join in the celebration!

Kick off the Summer with the joyously vibrant Sound Atlas Festival where whimsy meets the unexpected in this year’s SONIC PLAYGROUND, June 27-29. Revel in spectacular performances that amuse and delight, and basque in the charming, daring, evocative and playfully sinful music of 50+ living composers in a veritable feast for curious ears and imagination! SONIC PLAYGROUND brings together the best of contemporary music and leading artists, ensembles, and composers in this third annual new music festival.

SAF is Calgary's landmark contemporary art music festival - an experimental adventure in sound taking place in Calgary each June. SAF offers composers, artists, and treasured community an annual sonic Pilgrimage, exploring the best of today’s art music through world-class and unforgettable concert experiences. It is hosted by the powerhouse mixed chamber ensemble Latitude 49 in partnership with Contemporary Calgary, a vibrant destination dedicated to modern and contemporary art.

Festival goers can anticipate an eclectic and diverse range of musical styles, with something for everyone. Each day will feature multiple concert events and pop-up style performances with our Contemporary Performance Lab fellows, in a sonic feast for the culturally curious. Audiences will enjoy plenty of time to mingle, reflect and explore, moving through a variety of gallery spaces at Contemporary Calgary, hopefully with a beer in hand from The Establishment Brewing Company, named 2021 Canadian Brewery of the Year and festival sponsor.
