Celebrating 44 years of Calgary Folk Music Festival
From its origins as an eccentric kitchen party writ large to the major national event it has become, the Calgary Folk Music Festival embraces a singularly Canadian festival style, earning a glowing reputation for programming that welcomes music from around the corner and the globe, bringing together marquee artists, local favourites, history-makers and innovators to Calgary for a broad-ranging vision of folk with an edge, and a festival with a wry, get ’er done attitude.
The Globe and Mail dubbed the Festival ‘one of the seven musical wonders of the world’ noting that it has the best programming of the post-folk music fests. It provides authentic, magical encounters that surprise even dedicated festival aficionados, creating once-in-a-lifetime experiences for both artists and audience members.
The programming format, lovingly referred to as a series of arranged marriages, creates rare, wonderful opportunities for artists to meet and collaborate. These collaborative sessions group disparate artists loosely by themes, encouraging them to collaborate on each others material, creating coveted once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for audiences and artists alike.
The festival stays true to its roots and has kept its Woodie Guthrie-style ethos. The festival site is likened to a small town in a big city, nestled on an island in the heart of downtown Calgary, surrounded by rivers and skyscrapers. Stepping off the concrete, you enter a serene site built lovingly by the hands of 2000 volunteers. Eco policies are second-to-none. They are leaders in our community, feeding volunteers and artists organic, locally sourced meals, composting across the site, providing water free to all patrons, and disallowing the sale of bottled water. They were recently rewarded for these efforts with A Greener Festival (UK) award.
For four days each July, a village over fifty thousand strong writes their stories on the warm summer breeze and brims with the joyous sounds of musical exploration, community and inspiration. Its an aural adventure sweet and edgy, evolving and unpredictable. Its the Calgary Folk Music Festival. Come see and hear over 70 bands from around the world. The Calgary Folk Music Festival was founded in 1980 and is produced by the not-for-profit Folk Festival Society of Calgary. Held at Calgary's bucolic Prince’s Island Park since its inception, it’s one of Canada’s flagship, trailblazing music festivals with a national and international profile and a broad, cutting-edge programming vision.
The annual Festival is a four-day family-friendly cultural and musical extravaganza. Some 70 artists from Alberta, Canada, and the world perform on seven daytime and two evening stages in concerts and sessions – unpredictable mash-ups where artists collaborate in unique and unexpected ways, sharing songs and stories. It’s a genre-bending affair that cleverly unites roots, world and indie icons and upstarts from around the globe a destination event and essential community gathering for 53,000 Calgarians and tourists.
The site boasts a family area with interactive activities and live entertainment, a Talk Tent featuring comedians and spoken word artists plus other site animations, an artisan market, global culinary delights, a record tent and tree-shaded beer garden within earshot of two stages. Its multi award-winning environment program includes recycling, composting, wind-powered energy and bicycle parking.
