Most of the events are free of charge (four events have a cost for services provided) and your financial support for the history festival is very much appreciated. Some events require pre-registration due to limited space.

Making Tracks: Travelling Through Time

Welcome to Historic Calgary Week 2023. Try to “make tracks” to many of the 82 events during the 11-day history festival and help celebrate “travelling through time.” One hundred forty years ago, the Canadian Pacific Railway arrived in Calgary. The same year, the Calgary Herald presses travelled on the CPR to Calgary and set up shop in a tent. Together, they provided Calgary with connections to the outside world that set the stage for our city’s growth into the world class city it is today.

Historic Calgary Week 2023 is also co-sponsoring, with the Winnifred Eaton Archive of the University of British Columbia, a conference entitled Onoto Watanna’s Cattle at 100: Indomitable Women in the West During Chinese Exclusion. Ther program includes several events at this conference that do not require a registration fee while certain events at the conference require a fee. All the events that HCW is cosponsoring are listed in the day-to-day HCW program. Please note that the conference starts the day before HCW 2023 and runs from July 27-29.

Check out the exciting lineup of walks, talks and excursions to again bring Calgary's history to you. For these eleven days, history enthusiasts gather to celebrate some of Calgary's oldest and most unique stories and treasures. Enjoy special events, various celebrations and more. It's an opportunity for Calgarians and visitors to hear the stories of the people that built the city, enriched people's lives through the arts and preserved the open spaces for all to enjoy.

The Chinook Country Historical Society (CCHS) is the local chapter of the Historical Society of Alberta (HSA), whose service area stretches from Olds to Nanton, from the British Columbia to the Saskatchewan border. CCHS believes history should be found, preserved, shared and celebrated. The HSA was established in 1907, CCHS was most recently incorporated in 1993.
